Shea butter is fractionated to produce shea oil. Not only won't it not return to the consistency of the butter, but it also takes on a rich, light texture of its own. Oleic oil separates from the more solid butter as it melts at a lower temperature and contains less stearic fatty acid, which gives Shea butter its solid, waxy consistency.

Because shea oil contains more oleic acid, it is more hydrating for our skin. The Marmite effect may be triggered by the aroma of shea butter. The slightly roasted, nutty scent is disliked by some people but loved by others. Shea oil won't cause as much of an allergic reaction as butter because of its milder aroma!
